TYLER, Texas — For only the second time all season, the St. Mary's University Baseball team will not at least split a series with an opponent after losing both games of the doubleheader on Saturday at No. 3 UT Tyler, 7-0 and 4-3.
Hits were at a premium for the Rattlers (28-21) on Saturday as they recorded three in the opener and six in the nightcap. Game one was only the second time in 2025 the Rattlers have been held off the scoreboard, and both teams rank in the top three in the nation, as the other occurred on March 1 at No. 1 Angelo State.
St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead in the second game, scoring a pair in the second inning, but the Patriots (40-9) plated one in the second, one in the third and two in the sixth. The Rattlers added a run in the seventh, but could not keep the rally going.
Junior
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) went 2-for-3 in the second game, scoring a run and driving in two others to highlight the offense.
Junior
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) dropped to 5-5 on the year, giving up four runs on five hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out one. Sophomore
Matthew Janecek (Houston) took the loss out of the bullpen in game two to fall to 3-2. He surrendered two runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in relief of senior
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio), who allowed one earned run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in three innings.
The Rattlers will try to end the regular season on a high note, taking on the Patriots at 1 p.m. at Irwin Field. St. Mary's has clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament and will be either the sixth or seventh seed, depending on the outcome of Sunday's games. The Rattlers are tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville at 26-21 in conference play. The Javelinas are at West Texas A&M on Sunday.
