LAKELAND, Fla. — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with a 6-1 decision at #31 Florida Southern.
"The opportunities were there in all the singles matches," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "We just didn't capitalize when we had game points. In doubles, we just made too many unforced errors to give them the point."
The duo of sophomores
Gia Posito (Houston) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) won 6-2 at number three doubles, but the Mocs (5-2) had already secured the first point with 6-2 and 6-0 wins at the top two lines, respectively.
Sophomore
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) continued her strong play this spring, winning at number two singles for the Rattlers (4-1). She won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to move to 5-0 on the spring.
Both senior
Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and junior
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) forced a third set at number four and six, respectively, while the other three ladder positions were decided in straight sets.
St. Mary's remains on the long road trip, playing at Eastern Florida State on Tuesday at 10 a.m. (ET)/9 a.m. (CT), starting a stretch of four matches in four days.
