MELBOURNE, Fla. — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team started strong in doubles and carried the momentum to singles play, despite harsh winds for a 6-1 victory over Eastern Florida State on Tuesday morning.
"We had some better movement in doubles today, which paid off significantly," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "EFSC put up a good battle in a few of the singles, but I think we were more patient in handling the wind."
Both the one and three doubles teams won 6-2, while the tandem of
Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) won 6-3 for the clean sweep.
Terlizzi made short work of her opponent at three singles, winning 6-2, 6-0. The lone point for the Titans (1-3) came at number two for the 2-1 team score.
Sophomore
Selina Wu, ranked #27 in singles at Division II this week, was pushed to three sets on court one, but won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, and sophomore Gai Posito (Houston) clinched the Rattlers' (5-1) victory with her 6-1, 6-2 decision at five singles.
Garrote dug deep to win 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at number four singles, and junior
Stela Sifuentes won 6-1, 6-4 at line six for the 6-1 final.
The match against EFSC starts a four-matches in four-days stretch for StMU. The Rattlers play at Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, before closing out the Spring Break trip with matches against IUP and Ferris State in Satellite Beach on Thursday and Friday.
