SAN ANTONIO — In a pivotal Lone Star Conference matchup, the St. Mary's University Softball team worked a split with Lubbock Christian, dropping game one 3-2 before bouncing back to win the nightcap 3-1.
The pitchers helped their own causes in both games, as reliever
Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) was 2-for-2 in game one, including a first-pitch single to right field in the seventh inning to put runners on the corners as the Rattlers (15-12, 10-6) attempted a comeback.
In game two against the Lady Chaps (17-9, 8-8), senior
Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) blasted a two-run home run to the deepest part of the park for her second of the season, earning her first win of the year in the circle (1-2).
Junior
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) took a tough first loss of the year in game one, allowing only two runs on five hits in three innings (5-1), while Saenz allowed one run on six hits with one strikeout over the final four innings.
Abrego surrendered one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in five innings in game two, while
Breanna Ford (Corpus Christi, Texas) picked up a save in her second game back from injury, giving up one hit with one walk and two strikeouts over the final two frames.
Freshman
Miah Corona (Eddy, Texas) was the only Rattlers hitter to get a hit in both games of the doubleheader, as she went 2-for-5 with a double and a triple and had two of the team's five RBIs.
Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) was 2-for-3 in the opener, scoring once, while
Gabriela Banda (San Antonio) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two.
