NEW ORLEANS — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team remained undefeated with a 7-0 sweep over Division I New Orleans on Friday morning.
The Rattlers are 4-0 in 2025, and all four wins have come via the shutout. StMU also has two exhibition victories over Division I opponents this season, though they don't appear in the record.
"We did a good job movement-wise today in doubles to gain the lead," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Everyone got off to a good start in singles and was able to carry the momentum all the way through, even with losing a couple of sets."
The Privateers (3-4) are short a player right now, so the Rattlers won three doubles via forfeit. Junior
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) and senior
Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) won a quick 6-1 decision at number two, while junior
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) and sophomore
Gia Posito (Houston) broke serve late for the 7-5 win on court one for the first team point.
Sifuentes received the forfeit at number six singles, while sophomore
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) was leading 5-1 in the first set at line one when her opponent had to retire.
Both Terlizzi at #3 and Posito at #5 won in straight sets for the team victory. At line two, sophomore
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) fought back after dropping the second set to win 10-0 in the 10-point doubles tiebreaker format. On court four, Garrote dropped a close 6-4 first set, then fought to get a late break of serve to win the second set and won the tiebreaker 10-7.
The Rattlers continue their trek east, playing at Florida Southern on Sunday at Noon as part of their Spring Break trip.
