Gauna Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Baseball Split

SAN ANTONIO — It was a tale of two games on Saturday at Dickson Stadium as the St. Mary's University Baseball team split the doubleheader with rival St. Edward's, winning game one 3-0 before dropping an 11-1 decision in the nightcap.

The Rattlers (18-11, 16-11) one game one behind the fantastic pitching performance of junior Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas), while the Hilltoppers (23-10, 22-9) came alive in game two.

The two teams wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Rattlers are ensured at least a split in the series with the 15th-ranked Hilltoppers.

GAME ONE RECAP
Gauna threw 6 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball before surrendering two hits in the seventh. It is the second shutout of the year for the Rattlers and the first complete game for any pitcher in 2025. Gauna struck out seven, one off his career-high of eight from the season opener against Sul Ross State.

It is the first complete game shutout for a St. Mary's pitcher since Steven Medrano threw one at Eastern New Mexico on April 2, 2022.

Both senior Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas) and junior Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) collected two hits as the Rattlers scored three runs on nine hits.

The Rattlers put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth to score the first run of the game. Brooks hit a bloop single to left-centerfield and senior Jacob King (San Antonio) drew a four-pitch walk. Senior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) took the first pitch he saw into shallow center to score Brooks.

In the fifth, Concannon led off the frame with a flare to centerfield. He moved to second on a groundout by junior Tristan Moreno (Seguin, Texas) and scored on a double down the left field line by sophomore Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) for the 2-0 advantage.

King led off the sixth with a single through the left side of the infield but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Parrish. A balk was called, and Jaxon Daigre (Pinehurst, Texas) came into run as Parrish took second base. Hogan Heller (San Antonio) took advantage of the infield pulled in and drove a ball past the shortstop into left for the third run of the game.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Hilltoppers flipped the script in game two, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits, and were aided by three Rattlers errors in the 11-1 victory.

Senior Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) didn't allow any earned runs in three innings of work, walking three and striking out two. However, three runs scored on the six hits to move him to 3-2 on the year. Derek Maples (San Antonio), Brandon Vasquez (Round Rock, Texas) and Cole Brady (Nacogdoches, Texas) all worked in relief. Brady gave up only one hit with one strikeout in the last 2 2/3 innings of the game.

Sophomore Matt Gauna (San Antonio) recorded two of the team's four hits, going 2-for-3 to stay red-hot at the plate this season, and he scored the lone run of the game in the second inning on a hit by Malone. Senior Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) had the other hit on the evening.
