Baseball Stumbles in Finale Against Hilltoppers

SAN ANTONIO — In another pitcher's duel at Dickson Stadium, the No. 15 St. Edward's Baseball team was able to hold off St. Mary's University to earn the series split on Sunday, 4-2.

The Rattlers (18-12, 16-12) scored their two runs on three hits, with senior Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas) scoring on a solo home run to left field on the team's first hit of the game in the fifth inning. Junior Tristan Moreno (Seguin, Texas) also scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) in the sixth to knot the score at 2-2, but the Hilltoppers (24-10, 23-9) scored two in the seventh for the 4-2 final.

Moreno's speed in centerfield also saved several runs, as he made three outstanding catches on the run.

Junior Hagen Rose (Troy, Texas) pitched five innings in a no decision. He gave up two runs on seven hits, with four walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Matthew Janecek (Houston) dropped to 1-1 on the year after surrendering two runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings of work. Senior Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) and junior Matt Sandoval (Uvalde, Texas) kept SEU off the base paths, combining to retire six of the seven batters they faced with only one walk and no hits.

Carson Blakely threw seven innings in a win for the Hilltoppers, giving up two runs on two hits with five walks and two strikeouts, and Jakub Rayfield earned his first save of the year, pitching two scoreless frames, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Rattlers face another tough test next week, traveling to Canyon to face West Texas A&M beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
