SAN ANGELO, Texas — Another strong starting pitching performance by St. Mary's University junior
Hagen Rose helped lift the Rattlers to a 13-7 win at No. 2 Angelo State on Sunday.
Rose, a right-handed pitcher from Troy, Texas, improved to 4-0 after allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts through five innings.
Matthew Janecek (Houston),
Ryan Romine (San Antonio) and
Carlos Flores Jr. (San Antonio) all pitched in relief.
Senior
Jacob King (San Antonio) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored, hitting a pair of home runs and a double. He also walked once as the Rattlers scored 13 runs on 12 hits and drew seven walks. Both sophomore
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) and senior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) added two hits and two RBIs each, while Lopez scored three times.
King is the first Rattler since
Devin Goins on April 26, 2024, to hit multiple home runs in a game.
Each team plated three runs in the first inning, ensuring it wouldn't be a quick day at the park. Senior
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) walked to begin the day, and Lopez hit a home run to centerfield for two runs. With two outs, King sent a ball over the fence in left-center for the 3-0 lead. The Rams scored three runs on three hits and a hit batter to knot the score at 3-3.
Junior
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) walked to start things in the second frame. With one out,
Tristan Moreno (Seguin, Texas) also walked, and a single past the third baseman off the bat of Elizondo scored Malone. The Rams went to the bullpen, and Lopez reached on an error, allowing Moreno to score. Heller doubled to the gap in right center to score Elizondo, and Lopez scored on a groundout off the bat of
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) to have the scoreboard read 7-3.
With one out in the fourth, Heller lined a shot off the pitcher for a single. Brooks took a pitch back up the middle and Heller scampered to third. The second baseman misplayed the throw back into the infield, allowing Heller to score, and Brooks to go to second. King blasted a home run off the scoreboard in right center for the 10-3 score.
In the sixth inning, with two outs, Brooks walked and came around to score on a double to right center by King to push the lead to eight, 11-3. Two innings later, Lopez tripled to right field and came around to score on a groundout to second base by Heller.
King singled to begin the ninth, and with one out, Malone walked.
Christian Keller (New Braunfels, Texas) pinch hit and responded with a base hit through the left side of the infield to plate King and push the lead to 10 runs, 13-3.
Angelo State attempted the comeback, scoring four runs on five hits in the ninth, but Flores Jr. was able to get a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the threat and give the Rattlers the 13-7 win.
The Rattlers return home to host Texas A&M International for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Dustdevils are coming off a 3-1 series loss to Oklahoma Christian.
