SAN ANGELO, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at No. 2 Angelo State on Saturday evening, falling 10-4 and 8-0.
The Rattlers (10-7) starting pitchers were able to hold the Rams (17-2) off the scoreboard early in both games, but late runs secured the wins as all 18 runs came in innings 4-6.
In the first game of the day, the Rattlers scored four runs on seven hits, led by seniors
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) and
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) with two hits each, while
Tristan Moreno (San Antonio) was 1-for-1 with a run scored, an RBI and was on base all three times after walking twice. Moreno's run came in the third inning on a successful double steal by the Rattlers, as
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) stole second and Moreno swiped home. In the third inning, Heller hit his second home run of the year, clearing the fence in right-center.
Moreno also drew two more walks in the nightcap, while Elizondo was 2-for-3 and
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) collected the third hit in the 8-0 loss.
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) and
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) were each handed a loss in starts on the hill. Cook falls to 1-3, while De Alejandro moves to 1-1. The two combined to walk only one batter, striking out seven.
Cameron Hodges (San Antonio),
Christian Molinar (San Antonio) and
Cole Brady (Nacogdoches, Texas) all worked in relief.
The two teams conclude the four-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
