Baseball Can't Overcome Tough First Inning Against #2 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team couldn't fight back after No. 2 Angelo State had a huge first inning, dropping the series opener 23-4 on Friday night.

The Rams (15-2) scored 10 runs in the first on nine hits with two Rattlers (10-5) errors and never looked back, recording four multi-run innings in the lopsided affair.

St. Mary's scored one in the third and had a mini-rally of three runs in the seventh, including the first home run by junior Christian Keller (New Braunfels, Texas) in the Gold and Blue. Junior Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) added two of the other five hits in the game, and he scored on the Keller home run.

Sophomore Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) also continued to see the ball well, going 1-for-2 with a walk, and he scored twice.

Junior Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) fell to 1-2 with the loss. Sophomore Braeden Brown (Sinton, Texas) and junior Daniel Vogt (Ava, Ill.) worked in relief.

The two teams meet on the diamond on Saturday for a pair of 7-inning contests. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
