SAN ANTONIO — Six pitchers combined to throw the first nine-inning shutout in almost four years as the St. Mary's University Baseball team defeated crosstown foe Our Lady of the Lake, 6-0, on Tuesday night in the final non-conference game of the season.
The half-dozen Rattlers (10-4) scattered five hits over the nine innings, and sophomore
Braeden Brown (Sinton, Texas) was credited for the win in a pitch-by-committee night. Brown pitched the third and fourth innings, allowing only one hit and striking out one to move to 1-0 on the year.
The team scored its six runs on nine hits and was aided by four errors by the Saints (6-13). Senior
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) collected three of the team's nine hits, while senior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman
Rob Gonzalez (Pleasanton, Texas) also recorded the first hit of his career, driving in the sixth and final run of the game in the eighth inning.
The Rattlers scored one run in the first, sixth and seventh innings before showing a crooked number in the eighth with three runs.
It is the first nine-inning shutout for the Rattlers since March 26, 2021, against Texas A&M International, 7-0. The Gold and Blue also shut out the Dustdevils in a seven-inning contest on March 25, 2023, 1-0.
St. Mary's heads out on the road, traveling to San Angelo to face No. 2 Angelo State for a four-game series. The first pitch in the opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
