SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team overcame a hot shooting first half from beyond the arc by Western New Mexico to win 79-67 and match the all-time record for wins to begin a season with six.
The Mustangs (0-7, 0-1) hit 8-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, keeping the game close, but the Rattlers (6-0, 1-0) made adjustments at halftime to limit them to 3-for-7 from the three-point line in the second stanza and outscored WNMU 43-33 after the break for the 12-point victory.
For the first time this season, four Rattlers scored in double figures, as the team scored a season-high 79 points. Sophomore
Christin Callens (Houston) led with 14 points, while senior
Aina Maynou (Cabrera de Mar, Spain) scored 13 and both junior
Allie Garcia (Adelaide, South Australia) and sophomore
Lena Newby (Cibolo, Texas) added a dozen.
Sophomore forward
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) blocked a game-high four shots, giving her 11 swats in the last three games, and Callens led the game with six rebounds. Malik and Maynou also led the game with three steals each.
The Rattlers recorded a season-high 13 steals in the game, forcing the Mustangs into 22 turnovers. StMU also posted a season-high 18 assists, led by five from senior
Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain).
The 6-0 record matches the best start in school history, tying the 1997-98 team, and it is the third time the Rattlers have started Lone Star Conference play 1-0 (2022-23, 2024-25) and all three wins are against Western New Mexico.
The Rattlers remain at home, hosting Sul Ross State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lobos opened LSC play with an 80-63 loss at St. Edward's on Thursday evening.
