SAN ANTONIO – For the first time this season, St. Mary's University Women's Basketball fans weren't notified by their smart watches that their heart rates were soaring as they led from start to finish on Saturday afternoon, defeating Sul Ross State 64-50.
The entire roster for the Rattlers (7-0, 2-0) played at least five minutes, with 12 of the 13 grabbing at least one rebound, and 11 different players scored at least two points, led by senior guard
Aina Maynou (Cabrera de Mar, Spain) with 13.
Both sophomore forwards
Christin Callens (Houston) and
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) chipped in 10 points each, while Malik led the game with eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Senior forward
Sian Phipps (Houston) came off the bench for a season-high six points and six rebounds, and she also blocked two shots, as the Rattlers swatted a season-best 10 shots.
Sophomore
Cornelia Petersson (Malmö, Sweden) dished out a game- and career-high four assists, as the Rattlers collected 17 assists on 23 made baskets.
Both Victoria Aguayo and Sophiya Bustillos scored 10 points to lead the Lobos, while Leslie Mojica had six rebounds and five steals.
The Rattlers grabbed a season-high 50 rebounds, outrebounding the Lobos (1-5, 0-2) 50-to-36, though the Lobos had 20 of their 36 on the offensive end of the floor.
St. Mary's has won seven straight games to open the season, setting a new school record and surpassing the six by the 1997-98 team. It is the second-straight season the Rattlers have started Lone Star Conference play 2-0.
The Rattlers play an exhibition game across town at UIW on Thursday at 1 p.m. before stepping back into LSC action at Texas Woman's on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m.
