Volleyball Takes Opening Set From No. 15 West Texas A&M

Edited on Sunday, Nov. 9, to update to corrected statistics

CANYON, Texas — The St. Mary's University Volleyball team hit .300 in the opening set at No. 15 West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon to grab the early lead, but the Lady Buffs responded on their Senior Day, winning the final three sets for the 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 score.

The Rattlers (13-12, 10-5) snap a six-match winning streak and are now in sixth place in the Lone Star Conference standings headed into the final week of the regular season. The Lady Buffs (21-5, 13-2) sit in second place behind Lubbock Christian, which has played one more match than WT and Angelo State. The first set was only the sixth set the Lady Buffs lost at home in 15 matches this season (15-0), and two of them came against LCU.

Sophomore Taylor Alston (San Antonio) tied her career-high with 16 kills and added a career-best six digs, while senior Landri Withers (Stephenville, Texas) added 12 kills.

Senior libero Alyssa Koehl (New Braunfels, Texas) led the match with 23 digs, and she once again didn't have a reception error on the road trip, taking 22 serves with no errors. Withers led the team with 24 receptions without a miscue.

Senior Laurene Robinson (Bedford, Texas) notched her fourth double-double of the season, blasting 10 kills with a career-high 17 digs. She also posted a season-high with six blocks as the Rattlers out-blocked the Lady Buffs 14-to-9 on the day.

Leading the way at the net was senior Dallasstar Johnson (San Antonio) with eight blocks, while fellow middle blocker Landry Cate (Hot Springs, Ark.) recorded five, extending her streak of multi-block matches to eight straight. Cate now needs one more block for 100 in her StMU career.

With her second block in the match, Johnson became only the second player in St. Mary's history to record 300 block assists in a career, and she now has 306, joining Jackie Jansky (1997-00) at the top of the charts.

Junior setter Haleigh Wilk (Salado, Texas) narrowly missed her 10th double-double with 22 assists and nine digs, while freshman setter Liz Salinas (Helotes, Texas) added 14 assists and the lone solo block of the match.

St. Mary's returns home to wrap up the regular season at Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers host Western New Mexico on Friday at 5 p.m. and Sul Ross State on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day, where the seven amazing seniors will be honored prior to first serve.
