Men's Golf Tied for Seventh After Day One on Fripps Island

BEAUFORT, S.C. — The second round of the GolfWeek Fripp Island to Bermuda Invite went much better for the St. Mary's Men's Soccer team on Monday, moving them into a tie for seventh place, cutting 14 strokes off the first round.
 
The Rattlers, ranked No. 13 by the GCAA Bushnell/GolfWeek Poll, shot a 299 in the morning, but rebounded for a 285 in the second round to sit tied with Lincoln Memorial for seventh at 584 (+8). Georgia Southwestern leads the field with a 565 (282-283/-11), while Lee is one shot behind at -10.
 
Both senior Baptiste Touchard (Saint-Agathon, France) and sophomore Guillaume Paquette (La Minerve, Quebec) were the biggest movers, cutting seven strokes off round one to climb into a tie for 38th place headed into the final round (78-71=149/+5). Sophomore Elijah Galvan (Austin, Texas) is also tied for 38th place after posting rounds of 74 and 75, respectively.
 
Senior Kongpop Kaikaew (Rayong, Thailand) shot a 75 in the first 18 holes, but fired a 69 during the afternoon, and leads the Rattlers with a 144 (+2) to sit in a tie for 14th place. Kaikaew hit 27 pars in the first 36 holes, one less than the tournament lead of 28 by TJ Thompson of West Florida.
 
Junior Philip Hallström (Gävle, Sweden) led the team in the opening round, carding an even-par 72. He turned in a 74 after the turn for a 146 on the day (+4) and is tied for 26th overall.
 
The Rattlers did the majority of their damage on the par-5 holes, shooting 16-under-par, which is the second-best in the field behind the -22 by Lincoln Memorial. Paquette is tied for the tournament lead in the par-5 scoring, shooting -7 alongside Oscar Hammar from Georgia Southwestern, who leads the entire field with a 136 (67-69/-8).
 
St. Mary's will be in the first group to tee off on Tuesday, beginning on hole one from 8:00 to 8:36 a.m. (ET). The golfers will be teamed with athletes from Lincoln Memorial and South Carolina Beaufort.
