SAN ANTONIO — A furious comeback in the fourth quarter by the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team fell just short on Friday evening as the team fell 50-46 to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Rattlers (6-5, 2-3) scored 22 of their 46 points in the fourth quarter after starting the first stanza with only six points, spotting the Javelinas (8-5, 3-3) a 10-point advantage.
Junior
Imani Ivery (Houston) paced the comeback, scoring all 10 of her points in the final quarter, adding one of her two steals. Junior guard
Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored five of her nine in the last 10 minutes, and she tied for game-high honors with five assists and three steals.
Freshman
Christin Callens (Houston) led the team with 12 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing her first career double-double. Fellow freshman
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) added seven points and eight rebounds as the Rattlers won the battle of the boards, 36-to-31.
TAMUK guard Kaycee Groves led the game with 18 points, two blocked shots, and chipped in eight rebounds and three steals. Janessa Payne also scored in double figures with 11 points.
The Rattlers' defense held Shelby Ray, the Javelinas' leading scorer, to nine points. Ray had scored in double digits in eight straight entering the contest. Ray did lead the club with nine boards.
St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M International on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Dustdevils won their first game this season over a Division II opponent, defeating St. Edward's 64-61 in Austin on Friday. Trinity Chears scored 21 of the team's 64 points
