Women's Tennis Wins Three of Four Doubles Flights at Kimbell Memorial

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team won three of the four doubles flights and had two singles players win titles at the Second Annual Kimbell Memorial Invitational over the weekend.
 
"I think everyone competed at a solid level this weekend and our results speak for themselves," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "Sometimes in practice, you can't really tell where your team's level is, especially if they didn't compete in tournaments during summer break." 

Sophomore Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) picked up where she left off at the conclusion of her first campaign, winning flight two with all three victories coming in straight sets. She and doubles partner Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan) also worked their way through flight A, winning all three matches en route to a title.
 
Senior Elisa Rodriguez (Houston) won flight 6 with a 2-0 mark after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals. She needed a late break of serve to win the semifinals in straight sets and only dropped four games in the finals.
 
Sophomore Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and junior Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) teamed up to win flight C, while sophomore transfer Gia Posito (Houston) and senior Callah Preti (Liberty Lake, Wash.) won flight D.
 
Senior Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain), Posito and Ospanova all reached the finals in their respective flights but dropped the championship bout to go 2-1 during the first week of the season.
 
"We wanted to make sure we honored Brother Al and Coach Kimbell during this event, as they both were all about sportsmanship throughout their career," Macom said. "Originally, the plan was to recognize one award winner for the men and one for the women. However, with several nominations from coaches and volunteers, we felt it necessary to have multiple players share the honor as they obviously made great impressions."
