CANYON, Texas — The St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team's pressing style dictated play from almost the opening kick in a 2-0 win at West Texas A&M on Saturday night.
Graduate student
Natalie Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas) scored in the 44th minute, while sophomore
Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas) took a lob pass from junior
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) and beat the goalkeeper in the 72nd minute for the 2-0 score.
The Rattlers (4-2-1, 2-0-0) outshot the Lady Buffs (4-3-0, 1-1-0) 19-to-9 in the game and had eight shots on goal while limiting WT to one late in the second half. Gonzalez collected eight of the 19 shots for the Gold and Blue and had four shots on goal as she scored her fourth goal of the season, while Dominguez notched her fifth of the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) recorded one save in the 83rd minute. The Lady Buffs had two others go off the crossbar.
The win stretches the Rattlers' unbeaten streak to four straight (3-0-1), keeps the Rattlers undefeated in Lone Star Conference play (2-0) and in a tie for first place with Midwestern State.
St. Mary's remains on the road, heading to UT Tyler for a 5:30 contest on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The Rattlers host Lubbock Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.
