Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Contest to #12 Midwestern State

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team put the pressure on No. 12 Midwestern State on Saturday evening but couldn't overcome two goals in the first half, falling 2-0 in the final non-conference game of the year.

The Rattlers (4-2-2) had eight of their 12 shots in the second half and limited the Mustangs (5-0-2) to only one shot after halftime.

Neither of the leading scorers in the Lone Star Conference managed to score a goal, though the Mustangs' Mere Escobar did have an assist on the first goal of the day in the 18th minute. The Rattlers' leading scorer, Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) - who ranks second in the LSC and ninth in the nation - was kept off the scoreboard as well, though he had two shots.

Cooper Tea scored the goal on the assist by Escobar, while Tristian Adams was assisted by both Max Gonzales and Anthony Perea in the 41st minute for the Mustangs' second goal.

"We are very disappointed with tonight's result," said Head Coach Johnny Clifford. "Our energy was good, and the lads really worked hard, but we made some individual errors, and ultimately, that cost us tonight in a game we could have got more from. We came out sharp in the second half and created a lot of opportunities to score, but we couldn't put one away, and against a good team like Midwestern you have to take your chances."

The Rattlers tallied five shots on goal by five different players and played a clean game, only getting whistled for only four fouls in the 90 minutes.

StMU managed more corners than MSU, 8-to-5, but was unable to capitalize on the set plays, as they snapped a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) with the loss.

Lone Star Conference play begins on Wednesday for the Rattlers as they host Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. The Chaps are 3-2-2 on the season and are coming off a scoreless draw against DBU on Wednesday night.
