SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team took care of business in its Lone Star Conference opener on Wednesday night, defeating Lubbock Christian 3-0 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
The Rattlers (5-2-2, 1-0-0) kept the pressure on the Chaps (3-3-2, 0-1-0) throughout the contest, doubling them up in shots, 16-to-8.Â
"Tonight was a good night," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "We played well on both sides of the ball and really didn't give Lubbock Christian anything to work with. This is a great three points and a really positive team performance."
Junior forward
Adam Aboohamidi (Wolfforth, Texas), in his first game back after missing the previous three, scored his first goal of the season, taking a feed from fellow junior
Calum Murdoch (Christchurch, New Zealand) and leaping over a defender to put the ball in the back of the net in the 30th minute for the first goal.
In the 38th minute, two former Lubbock Christian players in
Enzo Jaques (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and
Juan Jose Valdez Lopez (Ascuncion, Paraguay) paired up to find senior
Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas) for the 2-0 lead. Â
Nine minutes after the halftime break, the Rattlers put the game out of reach when Valdez Lopez found
Gianluca Fiorini (Scandiano, Italy) for the third goal of the night. It was Fiorini's first goal as a Rattler.
St. Mary's makes the long trek to Portales, N.M., to face Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. The Greyhounds were the team with the bye on the opening night of Lone Star Conference action. They won 2-0 against Sul Ross State in a non-conference contest last Saturday in their last match.
