TYLER, Texas — Good things come in bunches and that proved true again on Wednesday night for the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team as, for the third time this season,
Gael Gallegos scored a pair of goals lifting the Rattlers to a 2-0 win at UT Tyler.
The game was fast-paced throughout, with the teams combining for 32 shots. The Rattlers (4-1-2) took 18, while the Patriots (2-3-1) added 14 though only seven of those 32 were on goal.
"I thought we played really well tonight," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "We came out flying and created some really good chances in the first half. UT Tyler defended well and caused us problems going forward, so I'm really happy with the win. It's a tough place to get a win so we are happy tonight."
Gallegos, a sophomore from Laredo, Texas, broke through in the 50th minute as
Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.) quick-kicked a pass to senior
Gianluca Fiorini (Scandiano, Italy), who saw Gallegos streaking to the goal and placed the ball perfectly for the goal.Â
In the 80th minute, Gallegos took a rebound off a blocked shot by
Avery Estell (Flower Mound, Texas) and placed it into the lower corner of the net for the 2-0 advantage. It is the fourth time in Gallegos' career he's scored two in a contest.
Junior goalkeeper
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England) was in net all 90 minutes for the Rattlers in posting his third clean sheet of the season and his third in the last four games.
The Rattlers return home to host #12 Midwestern State on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Mustangs scored in the 89th minute to beat West Texas A&M 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
