COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — In the first road game of the 2024 season, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team posted six shots on goal but fell 2-0 to the UCCS Mountain Lions on Thursday night.
Â
Juniors
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) and
Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) each had two shots on goal, but the Mountain Lions (1-1-1) freshman goalkeeper Alexa Malaspina made six saves to keep the Rattlers (1-2) off the scoreboard for the second time this season.
Â
The two teams were scoreless in the first half, but UCCS came out with much more intensity than they did in the first half, scoring a pair of goals in under 13 minutes.
Â
StMU senior keeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made a great stop on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to keep the score at 2-0. The Rattlers were whistled for a handball deep in the penalty box, but Difronzo made the correct move, diving to her left for the save. She ended the contest with six saves.
Â
In the final five minutes, the Rattlers managed four shots on goal, but the Lions keeper remained alert to keep the clean sheet.
Â
St. Mary's remains in Colorado, headed north to Denver to face Regis on Saturday at Noon (CT)/11 a.m. (MT). The Rangers lost 3-0 to Simon Fraser on Thursday evening to fall to 0-3 on the year.
