DURANGO, Colo. — History was not able to repeat itself on Wednesday evening at Dirks Field on the Fort Lewis campus, as the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team was unable to score a late goal, falling 1-0 to the 15th-ranked Skyhawks.
Â
On the same field on Monday against Colorado Mesa, the Rattlers (1-1-1) scored in the 87th minute to draw even with the Mavericks, but StMU was unable to find the back of the net late, though senior
Santiago Nunez (Bogota, Colombia) had a stellar shot that was saved in the 89th minute.
Â
The game was extremely physical, as there were 31 fouls called, as well as 13 yellow cards and four red cards issued throughout the contest.
Â
The Rattlers outshot the Skyhawks (2-0-1) 16-to-8, with 10 coming in the first half. Nunez led the squad with four shots with two on goal. On the other side of the pitch, junior
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England) made four saves.
Â
St. Mary's remains on the road but will play a bit closer to home as they head to Austin to take on rival St. Edward's in a non-conference battle on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.
