Esports Announces Summer 2024 Tryouts

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's University Esports is actively recruiting for the 2024-2025 academic year. Coaches will use tryouts as a scouting ground to recruit for all varsity Esports teams: Call of Duty, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, and Valorant.

Registered participants who do not have access to a PC or high-speed internet are eligible to tryout from Shenanigans E-Sports & Gaming Venue at no cost. Shenanigans E-Sports & Gaming Venue is located at 5251 Timberhill Dr Ste 104, San Antonio, TX 78238 and is the official LAN Center partner of St. Mary's Esports.

Tryouts Requirement Checklist
  • You own the game you're trying out for, or the game is "free to play", game must be downloaded on your PC or console, and updated with the latest version of the game
  • Your in-game account must be in good standing (your account is not banned, not in a "low-priority" match queue, etc)
  • Your in-game account name or gamer tag is not offensive nor misleading: no barcode names, no words/phrases that can be interpreted as offensive, no names that contain trademarked products including but not limited to spelling variators or letter replacements

What to Expect During and After Tryouts
  • During: Losses will not be held against you, tryouts will be aimed at testing your ability to fit into different team compositions, with different players, at various skill levels
  • During: All tryout communication will be sent via the St. Mary's Esports Discord, this is where we will post team assignments, maps, and the rule sets for tryouts
  • During: Tryout time commitment is less than the time commitment you will be expected to make on the team. If you feel like you're struggling to make time for tryouts, you probably don't have enough time to practice and make match times while on the team
  • After: You will be asked to complete a feedback form about your teammates, failure to complete the form will reflect poorly on you
  • After: Coaches will reach out to participants to conduct an interview and answer any remaining questions

What the Coaches are Looking for

  • Attitude: Athletes with a friendly and positive attitude who build up their teammates
  • Coachability: Athletes who are willing to learn and willing to apply constructive feedback
  • Resiliency: Athletes will the ability to bounce back from a bad match and keep a level head
