ODESSA, Texas – The St. Mary's University Women's Team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-1 victory over UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon to conclude Lone Star Conference play with a 6-4 record.
Â
The Rattlers (13-7) are winners of their last three as they head into the Lone Star Conference Tournament as the fifth seed.
"We have had good individual performances all Spring, but haven't played well as a team yet," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "I'm hoping that this winning streak gives us confidence to play our best team tennis for all the rematches throughout the LSC Tournament. Since we are not a high seed, all the pressure will be on our opponents to beat us a second time."
Â
On Sunday,
Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) got the Rattlers started with a 6-2 victory on court one. The #20 tandem of
Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) won 6-4 on court two to give StMU the first point of the day.
Â
Kondo carried the momentum into singles, where she lost only one game each set at line three for the team's second point.
Â
Wu, ranked #12 this week by the ITA, won quickly on court one to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead, 6-2, 6-3 and Sifuentes clinched the team victory with her 6-2, 6-3 scores on court six.
Â
Freshman
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at line five and sophomore
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) dug deep for her 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win on court four.
Â
The Lone Star Conference Championship begins April 25 at the Arlington Tennis Center. The Rattlers are the two-time defending champions. Seeding and schedules for the tournament will be announced by the LSC Office.
