Women's Tennis Shuts Out Second-Straight Opponent

SILVER CITY, N.M. — For the second-straight match, the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis Team pitched a shutout, defeating Western New Mexico University 7-0 on Friday morning.

The Rattlers (12-7, 5-4 Lone Star Conference) recorded multiple breaks of serve in all three doubles matches to secure the first point of the day and all six singles players went on to win in straight sets to lift the Rattlers to their 12th win of the year.

"Everyone did a good job handling the higher altitude," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "And they were able to control their rallies quite well."

Both the tandem of Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) at number one and the duo of Elisa Rodriguez (Houston) and Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) at line three won 6-2, while Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan) and Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy), playing together for the first time, won 6-1 at number two.

Garrote (#2), Kondo (#3) and freshman Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) at line four all won by identical scores of 6-2, 6-1. Wu dropped one game in each set at number one singles for the 6-1, 6-1 win. Sifeuntes won 6-3, 6-1 at line five, while Rodriguez scores were 6-2, 6-4 at number six for the team sweep.

Garrote was the clincher for the team, winning her first victory-clinching match of the season.

The regular season and long road trip both end on Sunday morning at UT Permian Basin. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
