Women's Tennis Sweeps Lions for Senior Day

SAN ANTONIO — Honoring its three seniors before the match, the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team improved to 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play with a shutout victory over UAFS on Friday afternoon.
 
The Rattlers improved to 10-6 overall with their first shutout in league action this season.
 
Prior to the match, the three seniors, Bailey Godwin and Kyndall Quiroz from San Antonio and Elena Munoz from Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico were celebrated. All three have battled injuries throughout this season and were not in the lineup.
 
"I'm proud of our efforts today," said Head Coach Bill Macom. "We shook up the doubles teams this week and it seemed to help with their overall effort."
 
Junior Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and sophomore Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) didn't drop a single game on court one, while the duo of sophomore Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) and freshman Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) lost only one game on court two for the initial point of the day. The tandem of junior Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan) and freshman Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) broke at 5-5 and held at 6-5 for the 7-5 victory.
 
Kondo dropped one game in each set for her 6-1, 6-1 victory on court two and moments later Garrote finished at line one with a 6-0, 6-1 win for the 3-0 team advantage.
 
Elisa Rodriguez, a junior from Houston clinched the team win with her 6-2, 6-1 triumph at line six. It is the first time this season she has won the clinching point for the Gold and Blue. On the court next to her, Sifuentes collected a 6-4, 6-0 victory to stretch her winning streak to three.
 
After dropping the opening set 6-3, Ospanova turned things around on court four and didn't lose a single game over the next two sets for the 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 win. Terlizzi wrapped up the day with her 6-3, 6-1 victory at number three for her sixth-consecutive W, the longest active streak on the team.
 
The Rattlers host Cameron on Saturday at approximately 2 p.m. or one hour after the conclusion of the men's match.
