Baseball Clicks on All Cylinders to Split Series at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas — Crooked innings and solid pitching lifted the St. Mary's University Baseball team to its second-straight win and a split of the series at Texas A&M International. The Rattlers scored two in the first and fifth innings, five in the seventh and one in the ninth for the 10-4 win.

Freshman Brennan Greer (San Antonio) had the best outing of his young collegiate career, pitching five innings to win his first game. He gave up two earned runs on six hits and walked no one. He also struck out three.

Senior Andrew Girod (San Antonio) earned his second save of the season as he was on the hill for the final four innings of the game. Girod surrendered one unearned run on three hits, walking one and striking out six. The six K's are a season-high, and the four innings pitched are the most since the 2023 season opener against UT Permian Basin.

The Rattlers (12-18) also had the bats going as they scored their 10 runs on 13 hits with seven of those hits going for extra bases.

Senior Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas), RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas), Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) and Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) all had two base knocks. Brooks led the way with three RBI and Galvan added two more.

Isaiah Aguilar (Alice) doubled to left center with one out in the first and touched home plate after Brooks hit his second scoreboard of the season on the first pitch he saw in the game for the 2-0 lead.

The Dustdevils (16-18) tied the score on back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom half of the first. They took a short lead in the bottom of the third on a double, sacrifice bunt and passed ball, 3-2.

In the fifth, Elizondo doubled to left to kick things off and scored when Concannon tripled to right center. Brooks grounded out to short driving in Concannon for the 4-3 advantage. That score held until the seventh.

With one out, Elizondo doubled to right field. After a pitching change, Concannon singled to put Rattlers on the corners and Aguilar walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Elizondo and moved everyone else up 90 feet and the Dustdevils chose to intentionally walk Brooks. Galvan made them pay with a double to right to drive in a pair. Goins hit a sharply hit ball towards first base. The throw home to get the lead runner bounced away, letting Brooks come home on the tail of Galvan for the 9-3 lead.

Each team added a run in the ninth. With two outs, Goins singled through the right side and scored on a double to the gap in left center off the bat of Parrish. A pair of singles and a passed ball scored the unearned run for TAMIU in the bottom of the ninth.
The Rattlers host Texas A&M Kingsville. The series is one day earlier than normal due to the Easter holiday and will begin Thursday at 6 p.m.
