LAREDO, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team scored five runs over the final four innings, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback at Texas A&M International on Friday evening as the team fell 8-5.
Â
The Dustdevils (15-16) scored the first six runs of the game before the Rattlers (10-17) broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by sophomore
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas). TAMIU added a run each in the sixth and seventh frames to stretch the lead to 8-1.
Â
Brooks led off the eighth inning with a double to left field, moving to third on the throw to the infield. Senior
RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) walked and the pair moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. With two outs, junior
Isaiah Aguilar (Alice) doubled to right field to plate Galvan and he stole third. Senior
Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) walked, forcing a pitching change. Aguilar scored on a wild pitch for the 8-4 tally.
Â
In the ninth, junior Jake Elizondo (San Antonio) doubled to left and scored one batter later when junior
Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas) doubled to the gap in right-center for the 8-5 final. The Rattlers left the bases loaded however, ending the rally.
Â
Concannon, Brooks and senior
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) each recorded two hits, while Brooks scored two runs.
Â
Senior
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) fell to 0-5 on the season. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore
Brody Ticer (San Antonio), junior
Cameron Hodges (San Antonio) and junior
Tom Symonds (Canberra, Australia) each worked in relief. Symonds made his first appearance of the year and didn't allow a hit in one inning, though he did hit a batter and throw two wild pitches.
Â
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Jorge Haynes Field.
