Rams Pull Away Late in Both Games of Baseball Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO — The 15th-ranked Angelo State University Baseball team pulled away late in both games of a doubleheader on Friday to beat St. Mary's University, 10-2 and 14-7 at Dickson Stadium.

The Rattlers fell to 9-15 overall and 7-15 in Lone Star Conference play with the losses, while the Rams improved to 19-8 overall and 18-8 in league action.

The two teams have two games remaining in the series, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

GAME ONE RECAP
St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jake Elizondo (San Antonio) walked, moved to second on a groundout by junior Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas) and scored on a double down the right field line off the bat of sophomore Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas). Senior RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) singled to left to put Rattlers on the corners and Brooks scored on a sacrifice fly to left-center by Isaiah Aguilar (Alice).

The Rams scored 10 unanswered runs with two in the third, one in the fourth and seven in the sixth for the 10-2 victory.

Senior Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) had a solid outing, allowing three runs on three hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six – one off his season high of seven. Brody Ticer (San Antonio) and Karlo Kalifa (Round Rock, Texas) both struggled in relief, while freshman Miguel Bustamante (San Antonio) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings giving up only one hit with one strikeout.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Rams plated four runs in the top of the first, but the Rattlers answered with four of their own to tie the game. Elizondo once again started the game with a walk. With one out, Brooks roped a ball to right field for a double. Galvan hit a high chopper up the middle to score a pair. Senior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) singled through the right side and Devin Goins (San Antonio) doubled to the deepest part of the park in right-center for the third run. Concannon knotted the game with a sacrifice fly to right field that was inches away from leaving the park.

ASU scored three in the top of the second and two in the fourth to push the lead to 9-4.

With two outs in the fifth, Parrish singled up the middle, Goins walked and Concannon hit a home run into the bullpen in right field for the 9-7 score. The Rams got the three runs back in the top of the sixth and plated another two in the seventh for the 14-7 victory.
