SAN ANTONIO — A strong defensive effort translated into a victory for the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team on Saturday as they won 62-54 over Texas A&M Kingsville.
The Rattlers (4-16, 4-10 Lone Star Conference) held the Javelinas (9-13, 5-10 Lone Star) to just 27.3 percent shooting for the game, including under 20 percent in each of the third and fourth quarters, as well as holding them without a three-pointer in the second half.
StMU also made the most of its opportunities with the clock stopped, sinking 18-of-20 free throw attempts for a season-high 90%.
Freshman
Taylor Haggan (Parker, Texas) collected her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds, both of which were game-highs. Fellow freshman
Vani Sancho (Baton Rouge, La.) chipped in 14 points off the bench and junior
Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) scored 10.Â

Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) led the team with four assists each.
The Rattlers won the battle of the boards 47-to-33 and limited the Javelinas to seven second-chance points on the afternoon.
St. Mary's heads back out on the road, playing at UT Tyler on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and #10 Texas Woman's on Saturday at 2 p.m.
