SAN ANTONIO — Sometimes, the emotions of Senior Day can overwhelm you, and sometimes, they can fuel you. The second scenario proved true today for the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team as they upset Lubbock Christian, 49-47.
Â
Though the team honored six seniors before the opening tip, a junior and freshman stole the show for the Rattlers (5-21, 5-15 Lone Star Conference).
Â
Stina Svilberg, a junior from Tallinn, Estonia, almost had a double-double in the first half with nine points and eight rebounds and ended the day scoring a career-high 16 and tying her career-high with 10 boards.
Â
Taylor Haggan (Parker, Texas) recorded her second-straight double-double, giving her seven on the year after scoring 11 and bringing in 10 rebounds. The freshman also led the team with four assists and three blocked shots.
Â
The Rattlers led for 36:50 of the 40 minutes, though there were six lead changes and two ties early.
Â
Grace Foster led the Lady Chaps (19-8, 14-6 Lone Star) as she has most of the year, scoring 14 points, while Maci Maddox added 13 points. Kennedy Chappell and Reese Schumann each had eight rebounds, though they were out-rebounded by one in the contest.
Â
The ceremony before the game honored the half-dozen seniors on the roster in
Reyelle Frazier (Tacoma, Wash.),
Teanna Huggins (San Antonio),
Michaela Kucera (Schwäbish Hall, Germany),
Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.),
Alexis Robinson (San Antonio) and
Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland).
Â
St. Mary's has one home game remaining, hosting St. Edward's on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Rattlers make the return trip to Austin on Thursday to wrap up the 2023-24 season.
