Men's Tennis Opens 2024 with Shutout Win

SEGUIN, Texas — A late addition to the schedule to take the place of a weather-canceled match, the St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team swept Texas Lutheran on Wednesday evening on the TLU campus.

The Rattlers (1-0) were dominant in victory, winning all six singles matches in straight sets and shutting down two of the three doubles teams for their first win of the 2024 Spring season.

Senior Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) and junior Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) got the match started with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 tandem of senior Oskar Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia) and senior Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) finished moments later with an identical score. The No. 2 team of sophomore Bernhard Hauer (Vienna, Austria) and sophomore Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) won 8-4 for the early 3-0 Rattlers lead.

Faryniarz won the first singles point of the night at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Soler dropped only one game at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the team win for StMU. Irdoja was next to finish after losing one game in each set, 6-1, 6-1, while Llosa posted identical scores on court two. Neither Hauer on court six or Anton on court five dropped a game during their two singles sets, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The Rattlers face Southern Arkansas at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Ouachita Baptist on Sunday at Noon at UT Tyler.
