Baseball Can't Hold on to Lead at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The St. Mary's University Baseball team couldn't hold the early lead against one of the hottest-hitting teams in the Lone Star Conference, dropping the series finale 12-5 at UAFS on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions improve to 7-1 and win their second-straight series to open the year, while the Rattlers drop to 5-8 overall and 4-8 in Lone Star action.

Sophomore Garrett Brooks got the Rattlers on the board early, hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first after both Luis Aguilar (Alice, Texas) and Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) walked.  The Rattlers added a run in the second when Aguilar left the yard with a ball over the left field fence for the 4-0 advantage.

The Lions scored three in the second, two in the fifth, six in the sixth, and one in the seventh for the 12-4 advantage. In the eighth with one out, senior Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) singled up the middle, moved to second on an error by the left fielder off the bat of Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas), hustled to third on a single in front of him on the base paths and scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Devin Goins (San Antonio) for the 12-5 final.

Freshman Braeden Brown (Sinton, Texas) was on the hill for the first two innings in a no decision. He gave up three runs on four hits with three walks in his first collegiate start. Senior Karlo Kalifa (Round Rock, Texas) worked the next 3 1/3 innings and was credited with the loss. He gave up four runs on only one hit, walking three and striking out three. The Rattlers used four other pitchers in relief.

Aguilar, Brooks and senior RJ Galvan (San Antonio) each had two hits for the Rattlers, scoring five runs on nine hits. Aguilar scored two of the team's runs and Brooks drove in three of the five. UAFS scored its 12 runs on 11 hits and they committed two errors.

The Rattlers return home to host Oklahoma Christian in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 2-6 in conference play and played a two-game non-conference series against #20 Central Oklahoma.
