Balanced Attack Not Enough For WBB Against No. 9 Texas Woman's

DENTON, Texas — A balanced attack for the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball Team wasn't enough against the ninth-ranked team in the nation as they fell 85-53 at Texas Woman's on Saturday afternoon.

Ten of the 11 Rattlers (4-18, 4-12 Lone Star Conference) scored at least two points and eight players had at least two rebounds but fouls proved costly as the Rattlers were whistled 22 times compared to just eight for the Pioneers (22-3, 16-1 Lone Star).

Freshman Ramsey Robledo (San Antonio) and senior Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) each scored 10 points and had six rebounds to tie for the team lead in the two categories. Freshman Vani Sancho (Baton Rouge, La.) led the way with three assists and blocked a career-best two shots.

The Rattlers kept it close in the first and fourth quarters, scoring 19 points in each, but the Pioneers used big runs in the second and third stanzas to put the game out of reach.

Ashley Ingram led the game with 21 points and tied for game-high honors with six rebounds. Averee Kleinhans added 13 points and a game-high seven assists for the Pioneers.

For the first time this season, Ryng connected on more than one triple, hitting a pair in the first quarter and assisting on another two baskets as the Rattlers trailed by only three, 22-19, after the initial 10 minutes.

Freshman Olivia Shook (Houston) hit a pair from deep in the fourth quarter to give her a career-best six points on the day. In the first and fourth quarters, the Rattlers were 8-for-15 from beyond the arc, but hit just 1-of-14 in the middle two periods.

The Rattlers remain on the road, playing at Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, before traveling to UAFS for the final time in conference play on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m.
