Kondo and Wu End ITA Cup on a High Note

ROME, Ga. — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team ended the ITA Cup on a high note as they collected a win in both singles and doubles play.

Sophomore Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) started the morning with a straight sets victory, 6-3, 6-4, over second-seeded Amelija Supulneice from the Academy of Art.

"It was a great way to end this trip," Director of Tennis Bill Macom said. "Selina played some very smart singles this morning against an opponent with a lot of power and a very big serve and forehand."

Wu then paired with senior Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan), and the pair won a hard-fought three-set match, coming back from dropping the first set to win 10-6 in the third-set tiebreaker after the teams split the first two sets with identical 6-4 scores. The Rattlers beat Ane Ibarra and Estefania Garcia from Auburn University at Montgomery.

"In doubles, we placed our serves very well throughout the match," said Macom. "And we stayed aggressive in the tiebreaker."

The finals of both brackets were not played out due to travel constraints. Wu ends the tournament 1-1 in singles, while Wu and Kondo finish 1-2 in doubles.

The Rattlers have one tournament remaining during the fall season, as they head to the Bobcat Invitational, hosted by Texas State on Oct. 26-27.
