WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A pair of free kicks led to the two goals as the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team and Midwestern State University played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday morning.
The Rattlers (5-3-3, 3-1-2) struck first, scoring in the 61st minute. Junior
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) took a free kick after the team drew a yellow card and found senior
Alexis Truitt (Boerne, Texas) at the edge of the box and she headed the ball into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.
It is Truitt's second straight game with a goal, as she kicked the game-winner on Wednesday against St. Edward's. She now has three goals on the season, while Paniagua has five assists on the year.
In the 79th minute, the Mustangs (7-1-3, 3-0-3) knotted the score on a free kick by Nyxalee Munoz, which found Lillia Besedin for a header past the reach of Rattlers goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy).
Difronzo made five saves in the game, matching Mustangs keeper Allison Dellis. The two teams also committed 12 fouls each and were nearly even in shots as StMU had 19 and MSU 15. The Mustangs did collect seven corners, compared to only one for the Gold and Blue.
Truitt, Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) and sophomore
Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas) each had two shots on goal.
The Rattlers remain on the road, playing at Angelo State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Rambelles host Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon before welcoming the Rattlers to LeGrand Soccer Complex.
