SAN ANTONIO —
Bill Macom, Director of Tennis at St. Mary's University, has announced the addition of three student-athletes to the Women's Tennis team.

Karen (Kiki) Kondo, Janel Ospanova and Renata Bucco Paolasso will all join the Rattlers for the Spring 2024 semester.

"They are three solid athletes who enjoy the game and will bring great energy to the team," Macom said. "We had quite a few injuries this fall, and they will provide us with much-needed depth for this spring. Their addition should bring our competitiveness in practices to a higher level."

Kondo is a junior transfer from Union College in Kentucky, where she was an ITA Regional Finalist, won two matches at the prestigious ITA Cup and ranked No. 10 in NAIA Doubles. She finished 2023 ranked 21st in the nation in doubles and was an honorable mention ITA All-American. She finished 16-1 in both singles and doubles, earning Appalachian All-Conference First-Team honors. She was the 2022 AAC Freshman of the year, earning a No. 7 ranking in the East Region and was on both the AAC All-Conference First Team and the All-Freshman team.

"I am really excited to be a part of St. Mary's," Kondo said. "And to making a great contribution to the team."

Ospanova is a freshman from Karaganda, Kazakhstan, who was a three-time member of the Girls Youth National Team, as well as a finalist for the Namangan ITF Juniors J30 in girls doubles. She was the Girls Absolute Champion of Kazakhstan and Central Asia in U14 and both the U12 and U10 Girls Champion of Kazakhstan.

"I am very happy to join the Rattler team and can't wait to get started," Ospanova said.

Bucco Paolasso hails from San Francisco, Córdoba, Argentina, where she reached the semifinals of the U14 in girls singles and won the doubles title at the Argentina National Championship. She also won both the girls singles and doubles titles at the Region of Córdoba Championship in 16U.

"It is a great honor for me to play on the team," said Bucco Paolasso. "I am going to give my best in all my games so that the team is proud of me."

The Rattlers begin the spring season on Jan. 16 with an exhibition match at UTSA at 2 p.m.
