Comeback Bid for Women’s Basketball Falls Just Short

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team put up a valiant effort that fell just short at Angelo State on Thursday, as they fell 75-71 for the second-straight game.

The Rattlers (3-14, 3-8 Lone Star Conference) mounted a third-quarter comeback and took their first lead on a Taylor Haggan (Parker, Texas) layup with 8:04 in the final quarter. She grabbed her tenth rebound on the ensuing possession to notch her fourth double-double of the year, leading the game with 13 rebounds and tying for team-high honors with 21 points.

Senior Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) also poured in 21 points, while junior Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) added 12 as the Rattlers played only eight players on the night.

The Rattlers had no answer for Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant as she scored a career-best 32 points, which included 12 of the Rambelle's (14-6, 8-3 Lone Star) 22 first quarter points. Madeline Stephens added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

For the third time this year, StMU shot over 80 percent in a game from the free throw line, going 19-for-23 (82.6%). Haggan was a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe, while Powell was 7-for-8.

The Rattlers head to Odessa, Texas to take on UT Permian Basin on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Falcons defeated St. Edward's 68-63 on Thursday to remain undefeated at home this season.

  • It is the first time in Ariah Powell's career she's scored 20 or more in back-to-back games after tallying 20 against Oklahoma Christian.
  • The Rattlers have lost each of the last two games by an identical score of 75-71. The 71 points tie for the most scored this year.
