Women's Basketball Surrenders Lead in Closely Contested Matchup

SAN ANTONIO — Despite all nine players scoring at least two points and bringing down one rebound, the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball couldn't sustain an early lead, falling 75-71 to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday.

The Rattlers (3-13, 3-7 Lone Star Conference) led 21-11 after the first quarter as they shot 50 percent from the floor and were 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Eagles (3-12, 2-9 Lone Star) outscored the Gold and Blue in each of the next three quarters to come away with the four-point victory.

Senior Ariah Powell (Detroit, Mich.) hit the 20-point milestone for the second time this year and the third time in her career after going 6-for-7 at the free throw line. Junior Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) chipped in 12.

Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) was a stat-sheet filler for the Rattlers, scoring nine, leading the team with seven rebounds, tying her season high with seven assists and recording one of the team's two steals. Freshman Vani Sancho (Baton Rouge, La.) also scored nine on the strength of three triples.

OC senior Brooklin Bain led the game with 24 points, 15 rebounds and three steals, while Asiyha Smith added 21 points and tied for team-high honors with four assists.

The Rattlers head back out on the road, heading to Angelo State on Thursday and UT Permian Basin on Saturday.
