Wu Finishes as Runner-Up at ITA South Central Regional

ARLINGTON, Texas – St. Mary's University freshman Selina Wu made a run all the way to the finals of the ITA South Central Regional over the weekend, falling in the finals to second-seeded Alessa Maier of Texas A&M Kingsville.
 
"I think overall the girls played some of their best tennis of the fall," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "I'm really proud of Selina. It's very rare for a freshman to make the final of an ITA Tournament. In fact, she's probably the first one to make it in several years. She's a great leader on the court."
 
Wu, a true freshman from San Gabriel, Calif., entered the tournament seeded ninth and only lost one game in her first two rounds, defeating Anastasiia Opolska from Lubbock Christian 6-0, 6-1 and Martyna Jankowska from Cameron 6-0, 6-0 to move to the round of 16. On Friday morning, Wu upset fourth-seeded Anda Ghinga from Midwestern State 6-4, 6-1 and fought back in the quarterfinals to win in the third set. Lubbock Christian's Michelle Trochez won the first set 6-4, but Wu responded with 6-3, 6-1 wins in the next two sets to advance to the semifinals. 

 
Once again, Wu fought back after losing the first set. In the semifinals against fifth-seeded Muskan Gupta from UT Tyler on Saturday, she was broken late for the 7-5 loss in the opening set, but won the next two 6-4, 6-4. Wu continued to battle but dropped the finals to Maier, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
 
Senior Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) entered the tournament with the 15th seed and won her opening round in thrilling fashion, 11-9, in the deciding set against Sofia Giraldo from Midwestern State. She bounced back to win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32 against DBU's Caroline Hudson. In the round of 16, she was also ousted from the tournament by Maier, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Both junior Callah Preti (Liberty Lake, Wash.) and sophomore Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) lost in the first round, but won in the consolation round of 32, before being eliminated in the round of 16.
 
In doubles Wu and junior Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) won their first match, 8-5, against a pair from Midwestern State before losing by the same score in the round of 32 to another Mustangs duo.
 
The tandem of Preti and Terlizzi dropped their opening round to Cameron, 8-6, before receiving a pair of walkover wins in the consolation bracket to reach the semifinals, where they dropped a heartbreaker in the tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5) to Christine Jevecky and Letizia Corsini from Angelo State.
 
The Rattlers will await word from the ITA to see if Wu will advance to the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga., Oct. 12-15. The fall season will conclude Oct. 27-29 at the Islander Open II in Corpus Christi, Texas.
