SAN FRANCISCO – Substitutions played a huge role in the No. 20 St. Mary's University Men's Soccer match at the Academy of Art on Sunday, as two players off the bench scored all three goals in the 3-0 shutout.
Â
Sophomore
Alexander Carey (Glasgow, Scotland) scored a brace, while freshman
Avery Estell (Flower Mound, Texas) scored his first collegiate goal in the lopsided win.Â
Â
Carey was the first sub off the bench, entering the game in the 23rd minute and scoring eight minutes later when junior
Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.) found him on a high cross from the left box. Carey took the ball in the middle of the box and put it into the lower right corner for the first score of the day. In the 63rd minute, senior
Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland) notched his second assist of the year, finding Carey from the baseline past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Â
Estell scored five minutes later, finding the back of the net from the left side of the box in the 69th minute. The ball slipped right through the keeper's gloves for the 3-0 victory.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England) moved to 2-0-1 on the year with his second clean sheet. He made five saves in facing nine shots over his 90 minutes of play.
Â
Carey becomes the second Rattler this season to score two goals in a game, joining Foley who had two in the 2-0 win over West Texas A&M on Sept. 2.
