Baseball Wins 7-3 on Easter Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's Baseball snapped a 12-game winning streak for the St. Edward's team and handed them only their seventh loss of the season with a convincing 7-3 win on Easter Sunday.

Freshman Billy Baehr (San Antonio) pitched a solid four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a no decision. Junior Matt Bundy (Whitehouse, Texas) moved to 2-0 on the year, allowing only three hits in four innings with two walks and a career-best five strikeouts. Senior Andrew Girod (San Antonio) was on the hill in the ninth in a non-save situation, giving up one run on one hit with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Both seniors Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) had two hits each and Broughton was responsible for four of the seven runs, scoring two and adding two RBI. He reached base in all four plate appearances, drawing a walk and getting to first on a wild pitch after strike three.

The Hilltoppers struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first on three hits.

In the bottom of the second inning, Broughton reached on a wild pitch on strike three and scored when junior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) hit the fence below the blue monster in centerfield for the 2-1 score.

Broughton struck again in the fourth, doubling to left centerfield after senior Clay Bradford (Atascocita, Texas) drew a leadoff walk to knot the score at 2-2. Parrish drove a ball to the right side of the infield, but the second baseman led the pitcher too much on the throw and allowed Parrish to get to second and Broughton to score. Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) singled through the left side of the infield and Parrish scored on a double play off the bat of Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) for the 4-2 advantage.

Senior Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) reached on an error and stole second base leading off the fifth. He moved to third when Jacob King (San Antonio) reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on a failed pickoff move by the pitcher. With two outs, Broughton singled up the middle, plating King for the 6-2 tally.

Solis walked as the first batter in the Rattlers half of the sixth. He moved to second on a groundout by Elizondo and scored on a double to right center by Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) and the scoreboard read 7-2. The Hilltoppers scored one in the top of the ninth, for the final score of 7-3.

The teams conclude the series on Monday at 1 p.m. as the Rattlers look for a split in the Battle of the Saints.
