SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Baseball team concluded its rescheduled series with a 15-4 setback against No. 8 St. Edward's at Dickson Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Â
The Rattlers (17-21, 15-21 Lone Star) scored their four runs on nine hits with two errors, while the Hilltoppers (30-7, 28-7) totaled 15 runs on 14 hits with two errors.
Â
Senior
Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) continued his hot hitting, notching his fourth-straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 day. He also drew one of the two walks issued by SEU pitchers. Senior
Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and senior
Clay Bradford (Atascocita, Texas) also each had two base knocks and Braford drove in two of the three RBI.
Â
St. Edward's took an early 4-0 lead off three hits and a Rattler error in the top of the second inning. The Rattlers answered with two in the bottom half of the frame. Broughton led off with a walk and moved to third when junior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) doubled to the gap in right center.
Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing both runs to score.
Â
The Toppers plated three more in the top of the third behind four hits and tacked on two in the fifth for the 9-2 advantage.
Â
StMU added one run in the sixth. Mares singled up the middle to kick off the frame.
Jacob King (San Antonio) reached on a fielder's choice, but Mares was safe at second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Bradford blasted a shot to left field that went off the fence but was held to a single as King had to wait at first to see if the ball was caught. Mares scored for the 9-3 tally.
Â
Bradford hit his second home run of the weekend over the bullpen in right field, doing so with two outs in the eighth, but SEU was able to plate six in the ninth for the lopsided final, 15-4.
Â
The Rattlers have a short week after wrapping up the postponed series on Monday afternoon. They travel to Canyon for a four-game series beginning against West Texas A&M on Friday at 6 p.m.
