Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Wins Both Games of DH with Same 5-0 Score

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It was déjà vu all over again for the St. Mary's Softball team as they won both games of the doubleheader at Midwestern State on Saturday by 5-0 scores, both pitchers threw complete game, three-hit shutouts and the team scored one run in the first and three runs in each fourth inning.

Senior Catalina Cavazos (Houston) was in the circle in game one, striking out six to improve to 12-7 and throw her sixth complete game shutout of the season. Sophomore Madeline Bloom (Poway, Calif.) took the ball for game two, striking out three and walking two in her third complete game shutout of the year.

The Rattlers improve to 28-20 on the year and 18-17 in Lone Star Conference action, while the Mustangs move to 8-36 overall and 7-28 in league play. The teams complete the three-game series on Sunday at Noon at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls.

GAME ONE RECAP
St. Mary's scored five runs on five hits by five different players and were aided by three Mustangs errors.

The Rattlers got off to an auspicious start as junior Destiny Salinas (San Antonio) singled to right field and an error allowed her to speed her way around the bases for a run.

In the fourth, junior Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) walked on five pitches, stole second and scored on a single to center by Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas). Reyes hustled to second on the throw home. Jamison Holder (Magnolia, Texas) bunted back to the pitcher for a single and another MSU error allowed Reyes to score. With two outs, Ericka Gomez (Stafford, Texas) doubled to left center and plated Holder for the 4-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) pinch hit and bunted for a single. She stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a groundout to the shortstop by Lauryn Ramos (Marion, Texas).

GAME TWO RECAP
In the nightcap, the Rattlers five runs came on nine hits with two Mustang miscues. The team also drew seven walks, stranding eight runners on the bases.

With two outs in the first inning, Reyes walked and came around to score on a double to the gap in left center off the bat of Holder for the early 1-0 lead.

In the third frame with one out, Holder hit her second-straight double – this one to right center, scampered to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to third base that was misplayed by the catcher for the 2-0 tally.

Ramos singled up the middle with one out in the fourth. Junior Mackenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig, Texas) singled to the shortstop, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Salinas to put runners at the corners. Gonzales beat out an infield hit to short to score Ramos. Both Salinas and Gonzales moved up on a passed ball and advanced another base on a wild pitch. Reyes walked on four pitches. In a double steal attempt, Gonzales scored but Reyes was tagged out trying to head back to first base, making the score 5-0.
