Softball Collects Third Straight Shutout Win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the first time this season, the St. Mary's Softball team recorded three consecutive shutouts, sweeping the series at Midwestern State with a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Rattlers didn't allow a run in the entire series, winning both games yesterday 5-0 to improve to 29-17 overall and 19-14 in Lone Star Conference play.

Senior Catalina Cavazos (Houston) won her second game of the weekend in a three-hit shutout fashion. She walked three and struck out four for a 13-7 record.

St. Mary's scored its two runs on four hits – all by different players. Junior Mackenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig, Texas) collected the team's lone RBI and the top three hitters in the order – Destiny Salinas (San Antonio), Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) and Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) each stole one base.

For the third-straight game in the series the Rattlers scored one in the top of the first. Salinas walked, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gonzales, took third on a passed ball and she stole home on a successful double steal with her and Reyes, who reached via a walk.

Cavazos retired 10 in a row from the end of the first through two outs in the fourth when two close calls surrendered a walk. She responded by getting the third out on a foul pop out to Ramos right up against the third base dugout.

Junior Ericka Gomez (Stafford, Texas) walked to lead off the seventh and went first to third on a bunt single off the bat of Lauryn Ramos (Marion, Texas). The ball went about 3/4 of the distance back to the pitcher's circle and back spin sent it rolling towards home, allowing her to beat the throw. Dugi drove in Gomez on a groundout to first to double the lead to 2-0.

The Rattlers come home for the final time in 2023, hosting Texas Woman's in an altered schedule due to Fiesta Oyster Bake. The Rattlers will play on Thursday at 1 and 3 p.m. and Friday at 11 a.m. The three seniors on the roster will be honored after the conclusion of the doubleheader on Thursday.
