SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Men's Tennis team concluded the regular season and Senior Day in fantastic fashion, winning 6-1 against Western New Mexico on Saturday morning.
Â
The Rattlers finish league play with a 2-6 record and are 11-9 overall. The win gives the team the seven seed for the upcoming Lone Star Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday, April 20 at the Arlington Tennis Center.
Â
"This was a great way to end the regular season on a high note," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. We played some high-level tennis today."
Â
Coach Macom shook up the doubles lineup slightly, moving juniors
Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) and
Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) to number one for the first time this year and pairing sophomore
Mario Urdaneta (Houston) and freshman
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) together for the first time at #2 and it paid off as the Rattlers won the doubles point for the first time in three matches.
Â
The one tandem won 6-2, two won 6-3 and the three team of
Sebastian Azcui (La Paz, Bolivia) and sophomore
Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) were victorious 6-4 for the sweep.
Â
The momentum rolled over into singles play as four of the six Rattlers won in straight sets and Anton fought back at number three after dropping the first set to win the next two 6-3, 6-2.Â
Â
The Rattlers and Mustangs (5-9, 2-6 Lone Star) ended the regular season tied in the standings, but with the win on Saturday, StMU earns the seventh seed.
