Both Baseball Teams Generate a Lot of Offense in Opener at WT

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes had an answer for every grouping of runs the St. Mary's Baseball team pushed across on Friday night, defeating the Rattlers 16-10 in the series opener.

The Rattlers (17-22, 15-22 Lone Star) scored multiple runs in four different innings, but allowed the Buffs (27-12, 25-12 Lone Star) to score more runs than they had hits as WT plated 16 runs on 14 hits. It is the fourth time in the last five games that has occurred for the Rattlers.

Seniors Clay Bradford (Atascocita, Texas), Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) all had three-hit games, while Bradford collected three RBI and was missing only the triple for his second cycle of the year. Mares tallied two of the team's three doubles and Solis drove in another two.

Seniors Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) each added two hits apiece as the Rattlers scored 10 runs on 15 hits but stranded 12 runners on base.

Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) lost his second-straight outing to move to 4-2 on the season. He allowed eight runs on eight hits with six walks and two strikeouts in four innings. San Antonio natives Jared Sherer, Josh Buske and Brody Ticer all worked in relief.

Nick Marshall improved to 8-1 for WT with the win on the hill. He surrendered six earned runs on nine hits with six walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
