Baseball Splits Doubleheader in Canyon

CANYON, Texas – The St. Mary's Baseball team split a doubleheader at West Texas A&M on Saturday, winning game one 4-3 in 10 innings before dropping the nightcap 7-3.

Errors proved costly for both teams as only 11 of the 17 runs in the twin bill were earned. Each team had one miscue in each contest.

The Rattlers (18-23, 16-23 Lone Star) and Buffaloes (28-13, 26-13 Lone Star) conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
It took an extra three innings, but the Rattlers recorded the 4-3 win in game one, scoring the winning run in the 10th inning. All nine hitters reached base at least once and senior Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) led the team with two RBI.

Senior John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) pitched the complete game. He walked three, struck out five and allowed only five hits in the 10 innings. All three runs scored by the Buffaloes were unearned.

In the top of the second, Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) led off with a five-pitch walk. Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) singled through the 5-6 hole on the left side of the infield and Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) singled through the right side to score the first run of the game and with one out, McGowen singled to left to plate two more for the 3-0 lead.

WT got two unearned runs back in the fifth inning on two hits and an error and knotted the game at 3-3 with one run in the sixth.

Both Jacob King (San Antonio) and Clay Bradford (Atascocita, Texas) singled up the middle to kick things off in the 10th. Broughton moved both runners up with a groundout to the pitcher. Parrish also drove a ball back to the mound and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed King to score the winning run.

GAME TWO RECAP
Freshman Billy Baehr (San Antonio) started the third game of his career, getting the nod for the second-straight week. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with three walks in 3.2 innings to fall to 1-2. Senior Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) was effective in the final two innings, keeping WT off the scoreboard. He surrendered three hits and fanned two after two other pitchers took their turns on the bump.

Both Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and Solis had two hits as the Rattlers scored three runs on seven hits.

Mares led off the game with a single to left and he moved to second on a foul flyout by King. A wild pitch put Mares at third base and he scored when Broughton doubled past the third baseman with two outs.

The Buffs scored a pair in the second inning on two hits with a sacrifice fly to take the 2-1 advantage and broke open the game with a five run fourth inning.

The Rattlers attempted the comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits but were unable to push across any more for the 7-3 final. With one out, Parrish singled to second and hustled to third on a single to right field by Solis. Solis stole second base and Elizondo singled to right, plating Parrish. Elizondo was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Ryan Romine (San Antonio) that allowed Solis to score.
