Softball Flips Script in Game Two to Earn Saturday Split

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was a tale of two completely different games at Angelo State on Saturday as the St. Mary's Softball team dropped game one 8-0 but exploded for 13 runs in game two.

The split moves the Rattlers to 22-14 on the year and 12-11 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Rambelles are now 22-15 overall and 14-12 in league play.

The two teams conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. before the Rattlers return home to host West Texas A&M on Friday.

GAME ONE RECAP
Sophomore Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) held Angelo State to only two hits through the first four innings, but the Rambelles figured things out in the fifth scoring four runs on four hits. She ended the game with three walks and four strikeouts, moving to 4-4. Junior Sara Robertson (Lorena, Texas) pitched the final inning, allowing one earned run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Senior Lauren Garcia (San Antonio) had the team's lone hit in the game, doubling to right center with two outs in the second.

GAME TWO RECAP
St. Mary's flipped the script in game two as senior pitcher Catalina Cavazos (Houston) allowed only one hit, while the Rattlers scored 13 runs on six hits and took advantage of two ASU errors.

Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) was 3-for-4 with a season-best four RBI, while Lauryn Ramos (Marion, Texas) added another three RBI on a 1-for-2 day at the plate.

Cavazos improved to 10-5, allowing only the one hit while striking out five in 58 pitches.

The Rattlers wasted no time getting rid of the foul taste in their mouth from game one scoring two runs in the first. Junior Destiny Salinas (San Antonio) walked and the Rambelles took a risk, bringing in the right fielder as an extra infielder for slap-hitter Gonzales. She made them pay, driving a ball to deep right field and hitting an inside the park home run for the 2-0 lead.

The score held at 2-0 until the top of the fourth. With one out, sophomore Jamison Holder (Magnolia, Texas) doubled to left center and freshman Abigail Dela Rosa (LaGrange, Texas) entered to run for her. Mackenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig, Texas) and Garcia drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Junior Ericka Gomez (Stafford, Texas) singled between the gap on the left side of the infield to score Dela Rosa. Kaylynne Ruiz (Eagle Pass, Texas) walked to plate another run and Ramos singled past the short stop to plate Garcia. A throwing error by the left fielder allowed Gomez to scamper home. With two outs Gonzales singled through the right side to plate Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas), who was running for Ruiz, but Gonzales was thrown out trying to advance to second after the throw from right went to third.

After Cavazos needed only six pitches to retire the side in order in the bottom half of the inning, the Rattlers offense went right back to work.

Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) and Holder were both hit by pitches and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Dugi. Garcia reached on a fielder's choice, but the throw home wasn't in time to get Reyes. Garcia moved to second on a wild pitch and Gomez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Holder and Ruiz walked on four-straight pitches. Ramos walked to plate the third run of the inning. A fielding error by the first baseman allowed Salinas get all the way to second base and both Ruiz and Gomez scored. Gonzales drove in her fourth run of the day with a single to right field for the 13th run.
